About me

Hi! I'm Dr Jake Stephens, but you can call me Dr S. My passion for making maths add up led to me founding Summit Maths Tutor in 2024.

Wanting to combine my love of maths with a passion for teaching, I completed my teacher training and then decided to become a tutor. By working with students 1:1 I'm able to give students my full attention and help them to make speedy progress.

Speaking of speedy, when I'm not tutoring I love running and can be found at a Parkrun most Saturday mornings!

Experience

Qualified secondary school teacher

I have taught maths to students with a wide range of abilities from key stages 3 to A Level, including helping students prepare for important examinations. I have experience working with students from a range of backgrounds, as well as SEN students - every student I teach is treated equally and with a thorough understanding of and respect for their individual needs, circumstances, and past experiences. With an excellent understanding of how different students learn best, I'm well placed to work with students and design sessions that build confidence and mathematical understanding to help them reach their peak potential.

PhD in Mathematics from Newcastle University

After being awarded a First Class MMath degree from the University of York, I was awarded a PhD in Mathematics from Newcastle University. My research was focused on a very specific area of pure maths called Representation Theory of Quantum Symmetric Pairs - I'd be happy to talk to you about it if you are interested in learning more!

My teaching philosophy

I fully understand that every student is different, and has their own strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to help each student reach their peak potential, meaning they achieve the very best results they personally can.

I want every student I teach to look forward to our tutoring sessions together. I also want them to feel confident that, with my help, they will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding required to fulfil their potential. My approach builds mathematical confidence in students, which helps students to overcome exam nerves and perform to the best of their ability when it really counts.

When we begin working together, I'll develop a plan with you to help reach your goals and work around your schedule. I want the very best for every student I tutor, and so I develop a personalised plan for each student to help them reach their peak potential.

Individual online tutoring sessions allow me to dedicate time to each student, focusing solely on their progress. Using a variety of teaching techniques keeps sessions fun and varied. Together, we will approach challenges from a variety of angles to maximise mathematical understanding and ability.
